Tournament Report
2015年10月20日コメント (6)I split the finals of a tournament last weekend.
You can see my deck here:

I decided to try Monastery Mentor. Doomsday plays many cards that are good for Mentor (Sensei’s Divining Top, Cabal Therapy, Dark Ritual, Gitaxian Probe), and Mentor dying doesn’t lose the game immediately (Counterspell after Doomsday destroys you).
I am not playing any answers to Counterbalance/Chalice of the Void.
Can Mentor beat those cards? I don’t know. I didn’t see them last weekend.
Round 1 - RUG Delver 0-2
Game one, my opponent mulligans, but Delver is too fast.
I can’t win because the first safe turn, my opponent has Lightning Bolt and I have 6 life.
Game two, I am not sure how to sideboard, so I don’t have a good plan.
I cast Mentor on turn one, and I make a Monk Token. My opponent Lightning Bolts Mentor.
I used all my cards to cast Mentor, so I cannot recover.
Round 2 - UR Delver 2-0
Game one, I cast Duress and my opponent has no blue cards. My combo turn, I cast Cabal Therapy, and my opponent casts Brainstorm. I name Force of Will: my opponent’s hand has 2 Force of Will. I win with Doomsday.
Game two, I win with turn two Empty the Warrens.
Round 3 - UR Delver 2-1
Game one, my opponent mulligans to five cards. It isn’t a game; I win.
Game two, my opponent uses Wasteland to destroy Underground Sea.
He casts Surgical Extraction on Underground Sea.
I still have a chance to win, but I concede to hide my Mentor.
Information is important!
Game three, I win with Mentor. I cast turn two Mentor, and make two Monk Tokens.
My opponent kills Mentor, but the Monk Tokens are too strong.
Round 4 - BGu Stiflenought
Game one, my opponent casts Stifle on a Phyrexian Dreadnought trigger.
I win with Doomsday, using Laboratory Maniac to hide Tendrils.
(If my opponent sees Tendrils, he will save Stifle for Storm)
Game two, my opponent casts turn one Thoughtseize. My hand has Brainstorm, Top, and Mentor in it.
I discard Brainstorm. My opponent uses Surgical Extraction on Brainstorm.
That was a mistake, but I can’t take advantage. I lose to Phyrexian Dreadnought.
This game, my opponent plays no lands that make blue mana.
Phyrexian Dreadnought has Trample (Monks can’t block); my opponent has no counters.
Time to side Mentor out!
Game three, my opponent casts Valrolz, the Scar-Striped, and scavenges a Dreadnought.
I win with Doomsday, using Laboratory Maniac to avoid Stifle.
Round 5 - Dredge Intentional Draw
I decide to draw with my friend. We both are in the Top 8.
Quarterfinals - WUR Mentor 2-0
Is Stoneforge Mystic good against Storm? I don’t know.
Every game, my opponent cast Stoneforge Mystic, find Batterskull.
Every game, I cast Cabal Therapy for Batterskull...
Game one, my opponent uses Jitte and has two counters on it.
I played 3 LED before Doomsday, so I have a lot of mana.
There are many ways to win here. This is what I chose.
My pile is:
Ideas Unbound
Laboratory Maniac
Brainstorm
Brainstorm
Brainstorm
Use Top to draw Ideas Unbound.
Ideas Unbound → Top, Maniac, Brainstorm.
Cast Top, use Top to draw Brainstorm.
Cast Maniac.
Cast Brainstorm.
My opponent uses Jitte counters.
I cast Brainstorm #2. I win.
I don’t side in Mentor because my opponent plays Mentor too.
Game two, my opponent focuses too much on winning the game.
This is a problem many people have when they play against Combo.
My opponent taps his red mana to play Young Pyromancer, and dies because he can’t cast Pyroblast.
Semifinals - RUG Delver 2-1
Rematch!
Game one, my opponent mulligans.
My hand has 3 discard spells.
I make him discard all of his creatures.
No creatures = so much time!
I win with Tendrils.
Game two, I lose to turn one Delver.
My hand is perfect, but I need a draw spell.
The turn before I lose, I draw and cast Top.
My opponent casts Force of Will.
Game three, I make some mistakes.
My opening hand has 2 Duress.
Because I wait to cast them, I lose many cards to Daze and Spell Pierce.
But here is how I win the game:
My hand is Lion’s Eye Diamond, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Duress, Ponder.
My turn, I draw Silence. I have no white mana, I can’t cast it.
I know the top card of my Library is Burning Wish.
I cast Duress. My opponent casts Daze. I pay 1 mana.
My opponent casts Lightning Bolt. His hand is two lands.
I cast 2 Lion’s Eye Diamond, cast Ponder, keep priority, make 6 red mana from LED.
Draw Burning Wish, cast Empty the Warrens.
Make 16 Goblins. Goblins win!
I have a question for RUG Delver/Canadian Threshold players.
Do you keep in Tarmogoyf?
According to the inventor of Doomsday, you should side out 1-2 Tarmogoyf against Storm.
Storm decks want you to spend your mana, and then kill you while your lands are tapped.
You really don’t want more than two lands.
Finals - Dredge Split.
Dredge is not a bad match, but...
I live 3 hours away from Hachinohe, and I work the next day.
I always split the finals if my opponent agrees.
I liked Mentor, but I need more experience.
I wasn’t confident about my sideboard plans because I have never played Mentor.
I never sideboarded correctly, and I lost my first match as a result.

I play RUG Delver, and usually side out 1-2 Tarmogoyf against Storm decks. It depends on the number of side-in cards and whether I’m on the play or on the draw.Tarmogoyf needs 2 mana, and it’s CMC is very high.(Drawing many Tarmogoyf sometimes leads to loss, especially on the draw.)
I found 《稲妻の嵐/Lightning Storm》 cards from my storage box.
Sorry, I have 《稲妻の嵐/Lightning Storm》 English cards, but it isn’t Japanese.
osa: I found Japanese Lightning Storms the other day. Thank you for looking! Can you look for the card Darkness/暗黒?
Do you come Shizukuishi next Saturday ?
