1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn (引き裂かれし永劫、エムラクール)
This deck is different than mine. I want to talk about the differences.
2 Maindeck Abrupt Decay
In the world metagame, Eldrazi and Miracles are the most popular decks; as a result, there are some Doomsday players trying maindeck Abrupt Decay.
This is the first time I have seen TWO maindeck!
The player removed Burning Wish #4 and Chromatic Sphere for Abrupt Decay; that’s okay because drawing two Burning Wish is not good, and Chromatic Sphere is the weakest card in my deck.
I don’t like maindeck Abrupt Decay because Miracles is not very popular where I play.
However, the Miracles and Eldrazi matchups are terrible...I might play maindeck Abrupt Decay.
16 Land, 2 Basic Land
The player has decided to play 16 lands.
I play 17 lands, because I value playing land. I play Doomsday instead of ANT because Infernal Tutor means extra lands are bad.
Instead of playing land #17, he is playing Lotus Petal #2.
I think this is strange. Maindeck Abrupt Decay is a metagame choice against Miracles and Eldrazi...
But Eldrazi and Miracles are matchups that you NEED land for. Drawing Lotus Petal against Miracles is not good.
Unfortunately, the player lost Game 1 in the quarterfinals against Death and Taxes because Lotus Petal was not a land.
(Thalia was in play, so Lotus Petal was too slow.)
Also, because of Abrupt Decay, this deck only has 1 Island (Island #2 is a Tropical Island).
I think the low number of basic lands is a problem against Delver and Eldrazi.
3 Burning Wish
I think less than 4 Burning Wish is okay, but I think it is strange.
If you play more than 1 Lotus Petal, you want to be faster.
To be faster, I think more win conditions is important.
Burning Wish #4 means faster Doomsdays, or Empty the Warrens.
Basically, this deck is trying to use two completely different strategies.
The deck wants to be fast, but removed cards to make it faster.
The deck wants to have answers, but removed cards to play slower games (because more answers = slower deck).
Now, let’s look at the sideboard differences.
-1 Tropical Island, +1 Karakas
There is 1 Tropical Island in the mainboard, so there is no need for 2 in the sideboard.
Karakas is a bad card.
This deck is not white, so a white land makes colorless mana.
In the world metagame, Karakas only bounces Thalia, Griselbrand, and Emrakul. However...
If Griselbrand enters the battlefield, you usually lose.
Cast Emrakul or Emrakul from Sneak Attack? You lose.
Show and Tell -> Emrakul is a bad strategy against Storm; most players won’t try this.
So, Karakas doesn’t help against big legendary creatures.
There are better answers to Thalia.
This player lost Game 2 in the quarterfinals to Death and Taxes because he had Karakas in his deck.
(He lost to Ethersworn Canonist with Karakas in hand; if he has Massacre or Slaughter Pact instead, he can win.)
If you want to answer Death and Taxes, you need better answers.
-2 Abrupt Decay, +2 Xantid Swarm
There are 2 Abrupt Decay in the maindeck, so you can’t play 4 in the sideboard (sadly).
Xantid Swarm is still very good.
According to the player, "If I put Xantid Swarm on the stack, I could not lose."
I like this choice, and it was a good decision against the Delver players at the tournament.
The strong point of playing maindeck sideboard cards is the extra space in the sideboard.
Having Abrupt Decay, Xantid Swarm, *and* Emrakul is great.
I think Karakas should be a more useful card, though.
The player also said he didn’t like Void Snare.
"Maindeck Abrupt Decay answers the same problems, I don’t think I need it."
Isn’t it interesting?
