Before the last B&R announcement, I was playing a strange ANT deck.
The deck was not my idea. I received the deck idea from Kai Sawatari.
Recently, he was in 16th place at Eternal Weekend Asia.
You can see his list here: https://mtg.bigweb.co.jp/article/ewasia2018-legacydeck_9-32
The most interesting thing about this deck is Daze.
Kai and another storm player (Jon Alexander) built the Daze Storm deck for GP Chiba 2016.
Why Daze?
Storm is very weak to anti-combo permanents.
Counterspells? Storm spells are naturally strong, and so is discard.
Discard? Past in Flames is very strong.
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben? Oh no.
Chalice of the Void? Holy shit.
Most decks with anti-combo permanents can’t play the cards until turn 2.
ANT wins on turn 2 often (about 40% of the time).
If you survive an opponent’s turn 2, you win very often.
So, you can stop the turn 2 card with a Daze.
ANT is so fast that opponents can’t wait for extra mana to pay for Daze.
Daze stops *every* turn 2 spell; 1 Thoughtseize can’t stop an opponent with 2 anti-combo permanents.
Daze is free; on turn 1 you can choose to use Ponders and Preordains instead of casting Thoughtseize for anti-combo permanents.
Daze also taught me to make better choices in games to win by Turn 3--or Daze becomes very bad, fast!
After Eternal Weekend, I asked Kai about the Badlands.
ANT *must* play Swamp, but isn’t a second non-Island land bad for Daze?
He agreed, but he wanted more than one red mana source for Empty the Warrens.
These are the changes.
Maindeck:
-1 Badlands
+1 Underground Sea
New Sideboard:
1 Badlands
2 Cabal Therapy (陰謀団式療法)
2 Dread of Night (夜の戦慄)
1 Daze (目くらまし)
3 Echoing Truth (残響する真実)
2 Abrupt Decay (突然の衰微)
3 Empty the Warrens (巣穴からの総出)
1 Past in Flames (炎の中の過去)
Badlands is in the sideboard because you don’t want to play Daze when you play Empty the Warrens.
This new plan looks good, but the Tohoku metagame is different...
I made some changes.
First, I decided not to play Dread of Night.
I hate that card. It only hurts Death and Taxes, which is not popular here.
Nic Fit/Maverick are more popular, but there are no good mass removal cards for Gaddock Teeg.
Massacre and Engineered Explosives are bad...but Dread of Night is the worst.
There are already 4 Daze, 3 Echoing Truth, and 2 Abrupt Decay...maybe I’m okay.
Instead of Dread of Night, I wanted to play either 2 Flusterstorm or 2 Surgical Extraction.
To decide, I wrote a sideboard plan.
After writing my plan, I learned:
I never wanted to side in 2 discard spells
I didn’t side in Flusterstorm against anything except combo
I didn’t want to miss with Cabal Therapy
So, I removed 2 Cabal Therapy, put in 1 Thoughtseize, 2 Surgical Extraction.
Then, I noticed: many times, my plan was -1 Duress, +1 Thoughtseize.
So I chose to play 4 Thoughtseize in the mainboard instead.
I had one free space in my sideboard.
I really wanted to try Bitterblossom...but isn’t it too slow?
I chose Engineered Explosives, because it can be useful against Thalia, Counterbalance, and Chalice.
I also changed my plans so I didn’t use Abrupt Decay against Chalice and Thalia.
This is what I’m playing.
4 Polluted Delta (汚染された三角州)
4 Scalding Tarn (沸騰する小湖)
3 Underground Sea
1 Tropical Island
1 Volcanic Island
1 Island (島)
1 Swamp (沼)
4 Lion’s Eye Diamond (ライオンの瞳のダイアモンド)
4 Lotus Petal (水蓮の花びら)
4 Ponder (思案)
4 Preordain (定業)
4 Brainstorm (渦まく知識)
3 Duress (強迫)
4 Thoughtseize (思考囲い)
4 Dark Ritual (暗黒の儀式)
3 Daze (目くらまし)
4 Infernal Tutor (冥府の教示者)
4 Cabal Ritual (陰謀団の儀式)
1 Tendrils of Agony (苦悶の触手)
1 Past in Flames (炎の中の過去)
1 Ad Nauseam (むかつき)
-1 Duress, +1 Thoughtseize is the only change.
Sideboard:
1 Badlands
1 Engineered Explosives (仕組まれた爆薬)
1 Duress (強迫)
2 Surgical Extraction (外科的摘出)
1 Daze (目くらまし)
3 Echoing Truth (残響する真実)
2 Abrupt Decay (突然の衰微)
3 Empty the Warrens (巣穴からの総出)
1 Past in Flames (炎の中の過去)
I played this deck in a tournament in Morioka this weekend. I’ll tell you more later!
